walking around the corridors of hotel melia reforma, df. discussions and conferences on petroleum prices. protests across the street in front of torre caballito, where the whole issue is being discussed. the tv shows a food crisis coming up. in the states people are selling their valuables for fuel. there's petrol panic in the uk. "cuida el agua" signs everywhere here.

taking a breath from the cynism of colombian current events. getting a hold of the cyninsm of the mexican ones. i'll say "no comment" but not beacuse i don't want to think about our problems. it just gets way too overwhelming. will the cities implode before 2 years? doris salcedo keeps working from bogotá. some move out, some stay. can this dichotomy be made into song? "sur o no sur" tells it lucidly...

then there's "foxbase alpha" by st. etienne. uk end of the 80s, when the brits discovered extasy and gave each other backrubs (allison goldfrapp took early e to the sounds of ¨the big sky" by kate bush at the time). something so contrarily ingenue. why isn't "nothing can stop us" the new dancefloor? it sounds like the way ahead in a sense. we mean the song, not the e... we don't do it... but then think: a sheer wave of musical and sonic optimism that could lead you to proactivity. the dettachment required before a fully conscious series of actions.

and then there's the arctic monkeys. so yes, what's the point in reviewing an album not new anymore, what's new to be said? that domino records used to make records like "mobile safari" by the pastels in the 90s, and now after ferdinand and juana molina and the gorgeous and unlikely lightspeed champion, they're even making some of the best indie pop records. the energy, so decidedly postpunk, the intent is so sincere you can really tell why is it that keane never convinced you fully, a hideous comparison but not so off the mark i think. this referring to both the monkeys and domino.

what! a string quartet! i'm supposed to be this rock kid no? "champi the guitar guy." funny because people who met me in my early twenties remember me as the kid with the synthesisers (minimoog included) so they scratch their heads when they come to a new wave gig and we're rocking out with verde3. then some former students of mine will see me in the "latinofutura superbailables" parties with pepe plata djing reggaeton, dub and cumbia villera. or with the same pepe plata at new wave gatherings djing 80s stuff. or with the minimalheadz twisting around the beatz or turntabling.

then you find out that the first version of verde3 was called "verde" and involved a string septet back in 1997... so yeah the string quartet, a return to the roots of my first original composition ensemble format... this time with a laptop (or not) and a will to chant my lungs out on the microphone, if singing from your gut indicates anything...

the string quartet can be seen as an instrument in itself. you have two violins, a viola and a cello. you have four people you develop a working and personal realtionship with. you learn and you learn. you laugh at their jokes. you inmerse in their body language, sound, musicality, all like serum in the vein. a festival of harmonics and a human assemblage. i'm still in awe because this quartet are world-class and said they'd been looking for me to see if i could do some electronics for their pieces, and that they are interested in popular musics too. wow. i sigh because i've missed strings like an old true friend. i can't wait to begin writing and meeting!

some of the dearest moments ever were spent hanging out and working in boston with andrea deboer, flavio gaete, lorenzo peris and kristen odle. the first string quartet "when we were very young..." we did a play in boston 1997/98 with my dear sister pilar you know, an adaptation of "pedro páramo" with live strings and ektachrome subtitles and 16mm black and white projections... so glad i'm in touch with most of the crew, particularly with emilie blezat who is a gorgeous babe and works as producer of films and advanced theatre in paris, maria chenut who is also a gorgeous babe and lives and works in galicia, and mauricio rico (16mm film operator) who actually plays in verde3 today !!!!!! pili was susana and champi was pedro, pili acted and pedro read text. a wonderful achievement. it's decently recorded in audio too!

so from a minimoog to piano to synths and guitars to strings to recording and mixing to djing to running an academic unit to teaching to laptopping, to rocking, and now back to strings. always singing. always onstage. and always recording!

i see it like this: if music is multiple, if style has been left behind, if the public is diverse in what they listen to, the musician can be that as well: a chameleon in musical style, in instrumental approach, in working format, in the use or setting of the sounds created. music is music. sound is sound. it's all speakers placed or boxes tossed around for people to hear, see, feel, some plugged, some not. quite simple to me.

coincidences between quantum mechanics and the modern school of social psychology are impressive. two coincident ideas struck me particularly: one, how personality and reality in these new models has been admitted to be changing, modifiable, dynamic and alas, something you can create (eg the power of thought, eg the i-ching: "by one's thoughts one commands"). and two, the resulting importance of a proactive role in the individual in terms of the construction of his own (dynamic) personality and actions.

our modern world has become worryingly the opposite of this gorgeous array of revolutionary thought: the mis-use of the world "reality" by reality tv and its imposition of unchangeable "realness," obeying the rules for money. the uniforms of style and thought, all those "who isn't with me is against me," the mention of such thoroughly backward terms such as "the axis of evil" in a world which has already come to the scientific demonstration of the existence of god (quantum mechanics, gilles deleuze). the arts will squirm and the arts will sidestep, the arts will be la piedra en el zapato, continue to generate questions, thought, ideas.

so the socorro show went quite well. loads of punters, the dancing, the jumping, the glee. attendees included mejo and kim from barna (we'll hit primaverasound / all tomorrow's parties which will be lifechanging for sure), adri gonzalez from paris (future uuuuu videoclip coming from her)

so what's santo domingo about? not a good clue yet, but at least discovered a friendly cafe-resto from which this blog is being written to a margarita and thumping house. so yeah, you find a bar where one can get late nite food, thumping house with everyone sitting down and having a lovely time, generous margaritas, and a very nice bartender attitude, in santo domingo. it ain't no cancún. it's austere. but then that's the sweet detail. think of a pumping house place with a free computer and cheap cocktails and cheap spanish tapas. makes us bogotanos look like some real lame tight assed bastards, like real underdeveloped snobs. which we are ???

the open questions about the state of our indie scene. a wave came and went, our internal divisions only made it ever so fainter. now the inertia swallowed the wave. the media hardly noticed. which is also why i'm doing all this thinking and reading, wondering how to crack the egg, how to make this indie thing happen in bogotá.

this contrast reveals me our inadequacies in the bogotano music scene, of how we could be doing so much better in the way we work for our bands, for our sound, for our working conditions, and for our clients, our listeners. we could be generous. we could be not agressive with ourselves. there could be a gradient in what we look for when we party, la degustación, saborear un momento, we could be not self-important. we could also serve late nite food! and we could definitely have more stages where to play live music. in sum, we could be nicer and we could be less complicated and tight-arsed. se nos tiene que dar la gana. i will eternally point to how good medelink does things and how much we have to learn from our friends in warmer weather.

the santo domingo book fair is free and open to the public. coming elections here, also in france, stayed awake trying to find out what the hell did sego and sarko said on that tv debate...

they're kicking me out of the bar now. i'll carry on rambling, this caribbean weather's got my brain full of oxygen, constant thoughts of juan luis.

santo domingo airport. sunburnt and refreshed. new ideas. neno's hating her country as sarko has won. i hated mine both times uribe did so there. ideas in my head. a sense of clarity, of mental organisation. i guess i needed a few days of a different setting to put it all into perspective (the loudspeaker calls mr. carlos johnson, mr. carlos gonzalez, making me jump every time... will they have to make me open my bag again like on the way here? (i'm carrying my 01v in the big suitcase)).

after entire nights in an air conditioned hotel room watching mtvla, tv5, tve, bbc, tnt, fox, and even some rai, one gets a feel of certain things that running around in bogotá prevents. somewhat strange as this trip felt like a sort of new year. there was a full moon on the caribbean sea on thursday night. memories of my childhood cartagena days back in 82-84, the punctual renewal of energies the caribbean will always bring to me... as i saw myself weaving those "new year resolutions" a clear thought: why am i thinking of new year resolutions in may?

"to stop banging my equipment around" (literally: this trip both laptops earned new bumps on their chassis, time to visit rondón for the fix, internally unscathed of course, outstanding pieces of equipment that these machines are; i was due to go there anyway to finish up the maintenance work on the 12 inch).

***** about the bookfair i attended this week, santo domingo, república dominicana.

i was there for five transforming days. i saw my former mentor mario mendoza, heard him talk. i also saw roberto burgos cantor (the next alvaro mutis), heard him talk. el poder mágico de la palabra. stirred to the bone by them, by their words. if one had to pick the two most important colombian novelists alive (apart from gabo and mutis) it would clearly be them.

mario mendoza attended for the launch of his latest novel "los hombres invisibles." my former teacher: intro to literature classes 1992. at the time i was bored studying electronic engineering. his classes were an escape and a gateway. i shall elaborate on him, but in the meantime his mention of how he left the academia in favour of dedicating himself to his books in 2002-ish. he quit his job upon reading a native american one-phrase poem:

"salta, que ya aparecerá el suelo."

simple as that. he read it, he stood up, and resigned on the spot. now he publishes novels and his "satanás" has been made into a flim. un master. such a big influence in my life. i told him this during lunch two days ago. he was moved.

we did a reading set to music, of roberto burgos' lastest novel "la ceiba de la memoria." rolf and heidi abderhalden, aka mapa teatro. old friends now, five and a half years together. these are readings with them both on shure beta 87's and me on ableton live. we also read gomez jattin. irreverent. i got to play the piano. hm: piano, lobster, sunshine, literature, people, juan luis!

champi tells:
spring, holy week (strange name), cleanups, meeting old friends in parties (hadn't gone out in ages really), dancefloor djing, played music for a new play with mapa teatro for the goethe institut, played a fashion show in barranquilla with vicky sur, neu chums eugenia y carlota y lina, clara y celia, victoria y hugo a record in the making. grand really.

march was spent talking on the phone, endlessly, meeting people live and on celu, walking and reaching such a point of downtown dwelling that paying a monthly fee at the usual calle 13 parking lot was required.
observing loads! enjoying the pleasures of observation and being a quiet boy for once really! looking at people on dancefloors, looking at ravers in raves, looking at people basically, looking at smiles and new eyes, looking at windows for a rental sign. renewals and a sense of peace.

met a bunch of people after a while. lenis in lefunk, el profe radónico, buddies in cabuya and la 33, friends from mr. gomes en bombay, cello player in proyecto avalon, engineer buddies, sound company buddies working, heard about the stabbing of a member of the dear dub killer combo. hope he's better now, will keep u posted.

the scene, we may safely talk about a nascent colour in the bogotano scene. it touches all styles and has a thirst for organisation. so this makes the vibe happy, when people are coming to agreement in working for music and all. fortunate really.

this being the first insider with more than one entry per month. a good sign one thinks.

what else is happening? finally we're onto uploading new tracks on our myspace. it's all blogged. also to cutpaste a part of champi + verde3 myspace blog, written yesterday...

yes we are gently switching to spanglish on the blogs. smoothely.

CUTGATE RMX de "viernes por la noche" sale la semana entrante

SINGLE "viernes por la noche" (vox diana) sale en dos semanas

about the cutgate rmx. so champi's taking the tracks from the D (re) version of "viernes por la noche" which the band uses to play live (programmed by checho) and putting some gates here and there. so the reprogramming is not midi but sheer audio: the gate removes some inf. champi plays guitar on it and the original programming is all checho as well (the version online as we speak). the song was written by checho + champi with diana correcting champi's vocals, lyrics finished in a surprisignly short lapse of time... 90 minutes!

champi never wrote a lyric in this short time. it's got him thinking about the nature of composition, as well as writing new tunes claro!

then diana will hit the beta87 and there will be a first vocal version.

the song was written for it's first airing live in the ladytron concert december first 2006.

the lyrics: champi found diana's myspace blog. it read of things she wanted to do. it was titled "viernes en la noche" (still there we think), in the text champi finds "pintarse el pelo" as well as a general idea for the tune. after sitting three times w checho and getting the music and melody, champi went to diana's, wrote with diana giving yes nos and maybes to what champi produced then and there. 90 minutes... done.

the music: checho had made a section of programming. champi had ideas of chord sequences for a new song. the former was used as base for the verses part a, the latter for the bridge. part b of the verses (refrains?) were cooked in champi's head and then transcribed onto checho's programming with champi playing those ideas on acoustic piano (hi + thankyou marie + martin!).

why a rereading of "hopscotch?" because ale (aka maría alejandra camero b., singer with diana galán in "el angelito" filmfest-awarded song, as well as in the 2004 colón show in bogotá, and my dear niece) tells me she's reading it in school. so i remember the locations and reread a huge love story and the arguably the first important hypertext novel written in spanish (rulfo did it too in "pedro páramo" but by removing parts of the mother text)...

champi had literally one thousand cellphone minutes to spare from an unused month of corporate cellphoneplan while in paris, so he's been able to talk with everyone amidst jetlags and funny stomachs now that he's back. sounds terribly snobby but when you run an indie band over here believe us you use every single one of those 1400 minutes !

so he found out mauricio, checho and dianita are quite fine, plans for a gathering this week to sing some abba and to finish the mix of the now relatively popular "viernes por la noche." the lyrics will give it a surprising turn for those who have been listening to it on myspace.

it's lovely to know the rest of the troupe, the old friends, are well as well. champi and dani send emails full of love and good wishes, nico stays close, orlando works with champi for their second joint venture with miguel salazar (the first one was a short film by miguel titled "martillo" and which won "best original score" at an nyu filmfest). marianita gomez focussed on her thesis, riding her bike and playing her soccer... pepe djing the legs out of his dancers...

kind hellos to mery(jane) for such a sweet email and to those who are writing. since our new french friends are nerdy and also have trouble reading in spanish, we thought it a nice idea to keep the "insider" in english so latinos please don't feel excluded. we've been making some new friends from other parts of the world and we want them to feel welcome here too !!

yes we are gently switching to english on the blogs. if you have come this far into our blogland, then you are curious. so this insider text could be for you.

the new year caught us in important flux and change. we found old friends, we made new ones. we managed to play a show and a party, we know where we're heading we think, dianita will begin playing keyboards and tambourine, build the new rehearsal space, will also start selling some pins at shows... ¡¡¡ socorro !!! gig went quite well with killer sound from Orlando and our dear 01v. our friends there projected "dr. strangelove" on us as we played... Kubrick we're fine with, Cristina made some lovely pix and Pilar dvtaped us with good sound...

yes we are gently switching to english on the blogs. past all the discussions on language, after looking at the bogotano metal scene go anglo and then the poprock people deciding to sing anglo, well i suppose a carefully written anglo blog should not offend anyone.

this simply because it happenned. anybody can read this i think.

so holidays ended, abstract notion in my case. not for dianita, back in schoolteacherland. summer should catch us in barna doing shows. she looks forward.

at any rate i have eighteen days and counting before going off to madrid, to do sarah kane with mapa teatro and my friend alfredo vargas (bicho) 's compositions. i'll be dubber and sound engineer. reading that text, heavy and gorgeous. "4:48 psychosis." i need to learn the text so as to navigate within the piece easily.

i want to sleep off the whole closure processes involving my five and a half years spent teaching sound engineering in college. i can't now, but i'll find some time next month. i feel one million things, gratitude and sadness and sighs of course.

en este blog, que es el de los amigos cercanos, les contamos un poco los detalles de nuestras andanzas.

diciembre 2006 inolvidable... de la presencia de público queda un sabor a familia que se forma y a contacto muy directo con los escuchas. de la energía de la gente un sabor a cercanía y a posibilidades. de lo de Ladytron un sabor a misión cumplida, de los tokes en radio orgullo infinito de estar ahí y de animar al parche a que la música en vivo sea el punto de partida de las bandas... tocamos sin parar y ahora al mar...

ok el toke de ladytron salió lindo. nos fuimos sin batería, con las máquinas. champi le compró pilas a la organeta casio tonebank de diana, ¡lo cual fue muy bueno a la hora que la compu se quedó muda y checho pudo tocar batería con los botones verdes del juguete aquel en "casa"!
fue la oportunidad para probar un verde3 más hombre-máquina. se sintió bien y ha sido grato leer buenos reviews.
GRACIAS a LA SALA y a LADYTRON por ser tan chéveres y tan disponibles frente a nuestras ideas.

algunos de nuestros amigos podrán recordar aquellas sesiones de electrónica donde todo nació un día en el bar EL EDIFICIO y después se profundizara con Alex Von Loebell en el AUDITORIO LAS TORRES, en 2002.
ahora estamos felices de contarles que las sesiones fonoespacio regresan. la última en 2004 en barcelona.
son sesiones que duran muchas horas. el del sábado duró once. y nuestros queridos amigos vinieron a poner música de ellos y de gente que aman.
como siempre, en defensa del dub, el new wave, el idm.

rockeamos duro en la nueva tarima del darlin, les quedó re buena. montones de parche, un ampli rebelde, gente que nos escuchaba por primera vez, muy rico.

¡divertidísimo! BHANG tocó y sonó impecable. imprimimos unos libros con las letras para que la gente se subiera a cantar. uno se lo robaron... nos moríamos de risa... la próxima vez organizamos un sistema de turnos... gracias a CANDELARIO y a todos los que vinieron a cantar... tenemos que diseñar un sistema más "equal opportunity" para los que tienen ilusión de subirse al escenario pero no les dan ganas de tener que pedirlo demasiado...
